Understanding Basement Lowering Methods – A Brief Guide
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A dark and cramped basement can lower the value of your home if you have plans to sell it in the future. However, you can make it right by renovating it into a bright, comfortable, and usable space.

One of the most effective ways to go about it is by lowering your basement floor. This will not only give you more headroom but also turn it into a welcoming space.

Besides comfort, a finished basement adds significant value to your property and makes it more appealing to future buyers. But before you start looking for basement lowering companies in Toronto, let’s give you an idea about the different methods used.

Underpinning

Although underpinning is complex and expensive, it is the most secure way to lower your basement. It involves digging underneath the foundation walls and pouring concrete under each section created. This helps support the home at a lower level while you get more ceiling height across your entire basement.

This method is ideal if you plan to use your basement as a main living area or want to maximize the space. It also adds structural strength to the foundation, making it a solid long-term investment.

Bench Footing

Bench footing is a simple method that requires you to create a ledge or step along the inside of the basement walls. This allows the center of the floor to be lowered without disturbing the home’s foundation.

While benching is more affordable, it takes up some floor space because of the concrete bench that remains around the perimeter. If you have a smaller area, this may not be a suitable method.

Underpinning vs. Bench Footing: Which to Choose?

When it comes down to choosing between underpinning and bench footing, you should consider your goals and budget. If you want maximum ceiling height, underpinning is a better choice. But if you are looking for a quicker and more budget-friendly option, you should go for bench footing.

Keep in mind that your home’s foundation type, local building laws, and soil conditions will also affect what’s possible. This is why it is better to consult a professional before starting the project.

Basement lowering is a smart investment if you want to make better use of the space. Based on your preference and other factors, you can choose any of the methods to complete the project.
